Efficacy of oral calcium pentosan polysulphate for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the canine stifle joint secondary to cranial cruciate ligament deficiency

Null on both endpoints that matter: over one year there were no differences between oral calcium PPS and placebo in owner-assessed function or in radiographic OA progression; only a synovial-fluid keratan-sulfate marker (5D4) fell significantly in the treated group.

Population

Dogs with cruciate-deficient stifle OA, treated surgically, followed one year

Intervention

Oral calcium PPS 10 mg/kg weekly for 4 weeks, repeated every 12 weeks

Comparator

Placebo (double-blind)

Limitations

Oral calcium PPS, not the injectable sodium salt used in the positive trials; the null spans function and structure alike.
