The effect of three different doses of sodium pentosan polysulphate on haematological and haemostatic variables in adult horses

The dose-response for the anticoagulant effect: partial thromboplastin time rose in proportion to dose and returned to baseline by 48 hours, remaining above baseline for up to 24 hours at the clinical 3 mg/kg dose. The authors' practical conclusion was to avoid high-stress or injury-prone activity within 24 hours of a dose.

Population

8 adult Standardbred horses, each receiving all four doses across 4 weeks

Intervention

Single injections of PPS at 0, 3, 6 and 10 mg/kg

The 0 mg/kg week in the same horses

Limitations

Eight healthy horses and single doses; species differences in coagulation mean the 24-hour window is a veterinary recommendation, not a human one — but the direction and the dose-dependence match what human injection studies show.
