Plasma and synovial fluid concentrations of calcium pentosan polysulphate achieved in the horse following intramuscular injection

The only measurement of how much injected PPS reaches a joint: after a single intramuscular dose, synovial-fluid concentrations were, against published in-vitro thresholds, high enough to plausibly act on synoviocyte metabolism and possibly on proteoglycan synthesis and matrix metalloproteinase activity in cartilage.

Limitations

Six healthy horses, single dose, calcium salt rather than the sodium salt used in human injections; 'sufficient to elicit a potential therapeutic effect' is a comparison against in-vitro thresholds, not a demonstrated joint effect.
