Identification of food-derived collagen peptides in human blood after oral ingestion of gelatin hydrolysates

Iwai K, Hasegawa T, Taguchi Y, et al. · Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry

Preclinicalcounts toward this tier

Hydroxyproline-containing peptides (mainly Pro-Hyp) appeared in blood, peaking at 20-60 nmol/mL at 1-2 h — direct evidence that collagen peptides from foods including chicken feet are absorbed intact. Absorption is not efficacy.

Population
Healthy human volunteers after a 12-h fast
Intervention
Single 9.4-23 g doses of gelatin hydrolysate from porcine skin, chicken feet, or cartilage
Limitations
Very small uncontrolled pharmacokinetic study; co-authors affiliated with a meat-industry research institute (Nippon Meat Packers).
