Chondroprotective effects of pomegranate juice on monoiodoacetate-induced osteoarthritis of the knee joint of mice

Hadipour-Jahromy M, Mozaffari-Kermani R · Phytotherapy Research

Preclinicalcounts toward this tier

Dose-dependent protection: chondrocyte damage was significantly reduced and proteoglycan content better preserved at the higher juice doses, with no synovial cell proliferation or inflammatory infiltrate. Notable because the intervention is the juice itself rather than a concentrated extract.

Population
Mice with monoiodoacetate-induced knee osteoarthritis
Intervention
Pomegranate juice orally at 4, 10 or 20 mL/kg
Comparator
Untreated MIA mice
Limitations
Chemically induced OA in mice, histology only, small groups, and 20 mL/kg scaled to a person is well over a litre of juice a day.
