Impact of Supplementation with Curcuminoids on Systemic Inflammation in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: Findings from a Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial

Rahimnia AR, Panahi Y, Alishiri G, Sharafi M, Sahebkar A · Drug Research

Promisingcounts toward this tier

IL-4, IL-6 and hs-CRP fell within the curcuminoid arm, but the placebo arm fell on IL-4, IL-6, TNF-alpha and TGF-beta, and no marker differed between groups. The authors conclude the symptom improvement seen in the same cohort cannot be attributed to systemic anti-inflammatory action.

Population
Adults with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis, Iran (the pmid-24853120 cohort)
Intervention
Curcuminoids 1500 mg/day plus piperine 15 mg/day, 6 weeks
Comparator
Matched placebo
Limitations
Secondary biomarker report of a 40-patient pilot; within-group changes are reported prominently and the between-group null is the finding that matters.
