Resveratrol increases bone mineral density and bone alkaline phosphatase in obese men: a randomized placebo-controlled trial

The positive finding from a cohort that was null on everything else. Bone alkaline phosphatase rose dose-dependently, 15-16% above placebo at every timepoint on 1,000 mg/day (p<0.001), and lumbar-spine trabecular volumetric bone mineral density rose 2.6 ± 1.3% versus placebo (p=0.043). Hip density did not change.

Population
Middle-aged obese men with metabolic syndrome (the same cohort as the null metabolic trial)
Intervention
Resveratrol 1,000 mg/day or 150 mg/day for 16 weeks

Limitations
A prespecified endpoint but in a secondary paper from a cohort with many outcomes; 16 weeks is short for bone, hip sites did not move, and men with metabolic syndrome are not an osteoporosis population. Bone is not cartilage.
