TNF-α and IL-1β did not differ between groups at baseline and both were lower in the ginger group at 3 months — the mechanistic counterpart to the symptom trials, in the one study that measured it over a useful duration.

Population
Older adults with knee osteoarthritis
Intervention
500 mg ginger powder daily for 3 months
Comparator
500 mg starch placebo, double-blind
Limitations
Biomarker endpoints only; the trial reports cytokine change without an accompanying clinical outcome in its abstract. Ginger powder at 500 mg/day is a different exposure from the concentrated extracts used in the symptom trials.
