For the first 30 days the rats dosed from a month before surgery healed indistinguishably from the controls. The difference appears later: at 60 to 120 days their regenerate held a smaller share of connective and cartilaginous tissue and showed more advanced remodelling of new bone than either the controls or the animals dosed only from the day of surgery.

Population

45 old (24-month) male Wistar rats with a standardised post-extraction bone cavity in the mandible, in three groups of 15

Intervention

Cartalax mixed into the feed at 0.12 µg per 10 g of body weight, started either 30 days before surgery or on the day of it

Comparator

15 untreated old rats, whose cavity filled with a blood clot

Limitations

Histology and morphometry described qualitatively, with the differences between groups reported as descriptions rather than as tested quantities. Jaw-bone healing is not articular cartilage, and less cartilaginous tissue in a bone regenerate is a sign of bone maturing rather than of cartilage being built.
