Efficacy of combined undenatured type II collagen and hydrolysed collagen supplementation in knee osteoarthritis: a randomised controlled trial

Yuenyongviwat V, Anusitviwat C, Tuntarattanapong P, Hongnaparak T, Iamthanaporn K · Scientific Reports

Promisingcounts toward this tier

Null on every endpoint. Both groups improved significantly over time, but there were no between-group differences in pain intensity, KOOS function, rescue medication use, or patient satisfaction. The authors state their motivation explicitly: previous trials were 'most being industry-sponsored, which raises potential bias concerns'.

Population
Patients with knee osteoarthritis, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand
Intervention
Tablets containing hydrolysed collagen plus undenatured type II collagen, 12 weeks
Comparator
Placebo
Limitations
Modest sample (n=68) and 12 weeks may be short for a structural effect; tests a combination product, so it cannot isolate which component failed. Competing interests: none declared — this is one of the few fully independent trials in the field.
