Drug-Induced Liver Injury Secondary to Turmeric Supplement Containing Piperine: A Case Report

Six weeks after starting a curcumin-plus-piperine supplement, and on a statin he had tolerated for three years, he presented with bilirubin 10 mg/dL and ALT 2,706 U/L. Viral, autoimmune, ischaemic, obstructive and metabolic causes were excluded; both products were stopped, liver tests fell through the admission and were normal at six weeks, and he recovered fully.

Population

A 35-year-old man with jaundice, fatigue, pruritus and anorexia

Limitations

A single case with no rechallenge, no HLA typing and the statin stopped at the same time; no financial support declared. A recent, well-worked-up example of the piperine-containing product pattern the DILIN series identified.
